Update on released cheetahs

Category: Cheetah - Research, Cheetahs | Date: Oct 14 2008 | By: cheetahconservation

Hello! Sorry for the dealy in posting, but here is a quick date on the five released cheetahs. After nearly a month after their release, they moved over the mountains and were on a sheep farm, where they caught three prise sheep.

The cheetahs did eventually move out of the mountains and caught a kudu, however, it was collectively decided to dart the cheetahs and place them into the holding boma again. The boma has been extended to 50ha and the cheetahs will be re-released in November, after key staff is back on the reserve to monitor the release again.

In the meantime, we are eagerly awaiting the airing of the Channel 5 TV (UK) documentary filmed on site during the release. We will be posting that on our web site, www.cheetah.org as soon as we have a date.

Uh Oh, it’s probably not a good thing that the cheetahs were on a farm and caught three sheep. Right? Is this why they have been placed back into the holding boma again. Lisa

Yes indeed, it must be a setback for the cheetahs to be recaptured. I am guessing that this is more of a “teething problem” than a major retreat.

Wish you well in your second attempt. Just remember what the guy who invented the light bulb (Edison?) said…he did not fail 1000 times, he learned 1000 ways of how not to make a light bulb…something like that.
